Nature

The Gran Paradiso National Park takes in a huge high mountain area, from the 650 metres of the valley bottom right up to the 4061 metres of the summit of the Gran Paradiso. Larch and fir woods, vast expanses of alpine grassland, rocks, glaciers and waterfalls make up the ideal landscape to support a rich and varied fauna and for a trip through the wonderful world of the high mountains.

The Park offers a range of opportunities in every season: late spring and summer are perfect for admiring the flowers in bloom and for excursions at altitude, while in autumn the woodlands take on a myriad of splendid hues and the ibex and the chamois begin looking for a partner. In winter, the snow-covered terrain of the Park is ideal for walks, snow-shoe trips and cross-country or downhill skiing, and also presents plenty of opportunities to observe the animals who come down to the valley in search of food.

However, there is more to the Gran Paradiso area than the National Park, and from all of the valleys rise up particularly alluring mountain peaks, such as the Grivola, whose praises were sung by Carducci, the Ciarforon, the Tresenta, the Grande Sassière and the Granta Parey; the area is dotted throughout with lakes large and small, in whose splendidly coloured waters you can admire the reflection of the surrounding mountains: Loie Lake, the lakes of Nivolet on the border with Piemonte, San Grato Lake, the Lac du Fond, the Lakes of Djouan, to mention but a few, and without of course forgetting the spectacular waterfalls of Lillaz and Frenay.
