The bivouac, inaugurated in 1927, is dedicated to the mountaineer Umberto Balestreri, President of the CAAI (Italian Academic Alpine Club), who made a lot of first ascents in the Aosta Valley. Balestreri died on April 16, 1933 in a crevasse on the Morteratsch glacier in the Bernina Massif.
