Great Saint Bernard Tunnel

Saint-Rhémy-En-Bosses

Opened on 19 March 1964, this was the first road tunnel opened to traffic through the Alps barrier.
The Great St. Bernard tunnel is 5798 metres long and has two lanes, one in each direction. The southern entrance on the Italian side is 1875 m above sea level, the northern entrance on the Swiss side stands at 1918 m.
Equipment and traffic are handled in the two control rooms in the north and south stations of the tunnel entrances. These rooms are manned 24 hours a day and receive information about the various equipment, alarms and emergency calls. The toll is payable in euros, Swiss francs, and other currencies.
