Cly Castle
“The south side overhangs Chambave, while the other sides are protected by the promontory on which it was built. The wall boundary is rather vast, but only the eastern half was occupied delimited by a wall. The entrance is on the north side, originally protected by buildings which today are completely in ruins. A Romanesque chapel stands on one buttress… The walls and the conch have all but disappeared…The residential buildings, stood against the south wall, in the position least vulnerable to attack. They are in ruins. A fireplace with two small windows next to it is still visible… Some rooms were paint-decorated”.
This is how the historian André Zanotto describes one of the oldest manor houses in the whole of Val d’Aosta in his book entitled “Valle d’Aosta: the castles”. Today the castle has been designated symbol of Saint Denis.
Its history consists of magnificence, neglect and recovery, and today, thanks above all to the “Il maniero di Cly” cultural association, the castle is the backdrop of important cultural events and Celtic and mediaeval re-enactments.
Guided visits in summer periods.
